Özlem Sara Cekic has been a Danish MP for the Socialist People’s Party since 2007. She is the first female Muslim MP. A former psychiatric nurse, she is currently her party’s spokesperson for health-related issues, psychiatry, and gender equality. Cekic was the chairman of her party’s Ethnic Equality committee and founded a Diversity Network for health care professors from ethnic minorities. In 2009 she published the autobiographical book ‘Fra Føtex til Folketinget’ (“From Supermarket to Parliament”), in which she recounted her experiences as a politically progressive Muslim woman from a working-class background. She has also published a series of children’s books about Ayse, a girl from an immigrant background who faces daily challenges growing up in Denmark.
