Özlem Sara Cekic has been a Danish MP for the Socialist People’s Party since 2007. She is the first female Muslim MP. A former psychiatric nurse, she is currently her party’s spokesperson for health-related issues, psychiatry, and gender equality. Cekic was the chairman of her party’s Ethnic Equality committee and founded a Diversity Network for healthcare professors from ethnic minorities. In 2009 she published the autobiographical book ‘Fra Føtex til Folketinget’ (“From Supermarket to Parliament”), in which she recounted her experiences as a politically progressive Muslim woman from a working-class background. She has also published a series of children’s books about Ayse, a girl from an immigrant background who faces daily challenges growing up in Denmark.
