Suyapa Portillo Villeda

Suyapa Portillo Villeda is an assistant professor in Chicana/o Latina/o Transnational Studies at Pitzer College. Her work broadly focuses on social movements in Central America with a focus on Honduras. In particular, Portillo’s research centers on the intersections between labor, gender, and race in workers’ lives in the history of the banana export economy in Honduras and Central America.

Since the coup d’état in Honduras in 2009, Portillo has served as region expert in the media to attest to conditions in Honduras and the rest of Central America. Her expertise has been cited by CNN, NPR’s Take Two, and The Huffington Post.

Charlton McIlwain

Charlton McIlwain is an associate professor of media, culture and communication at New York University. His research interests, most recently funded by the Spencer Foundation, include issues at the intersection of race and media, particularly as it relates to how different forms of digital media have enhanced and/or inhibited political participation among people of color. Additionally, with race and class as starting points, he examines how political candidates can benefit or be hurt by race-based appeals.

McIlwain co-authored the report “Beyond the Hashtags: Ferguson, #BlackLivesMatter and the Online Struggle for Offline Justice” with Deen Freelon and Meredith Clark in 2016. His most recent book “Digital Movement: Racial Justice Activism from the AfroNet to Black Lives Matter was recognized by the American Library Association as one of the “Best Books” in 2012.

Sarah J. Jackson

Sarah J. Jackson is an Assistant Professor of Communication Studies and faculty affiliate of the Department of Cultures, Societies and Global Studies at Northeastern University. Her research and teaching interests include the use of media and technology to represent racial justice and social movements, with a particular focus on the role of social media in activism. Her research on the use of Twitter by journalists and activists has been funded by the Knight foundation.

Jackson is also a faculty affiliate of Northeastern’s Women’s Gender & Sexuality Studies program. Her most recent book, Black Celebrity, Racial Politics and the Press examines the relationship between race, celebrity protest and the media. Her commentary has been featured on PBS, Politico and NPR’s On Point with Tom Ashbrook.

Hisham Aidi

Hisham Aidi is a lecturer at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. He is also currently a resident scholar at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.

His research focuses on the politics of globalization, North-South relations and social movements. He previously worked as a consultant on UNDP’s Human Development Report and as a Global Fellow at the Open Society Foundation.

As a journalist, Aidi’s work has appeared in The Atlantic, Foreigh Affairs, The Nation and The New Yorker. He is the recipient of the Carnegie Scholar Award and the American Book Award of 201.

Aidi has written extensively about African and Afro-diasporan affairs for magazines including Africana, The New African, ColorLines.com and Al Jazeera. He has been a guest on WNYC’s Soundcheck and NPR’s Weekend Edition Saturday.

Dorian Warren

Dorian T. Warren is an associate professor of political science and public affairs at Columbia University. He specializes in the study of inequality and American politics, focusing on the political organization of marginalized groups, race and ethnic politics, labor politics, urban politics, American political development, social movements and social science methodology. Warren is a sought-after commentator frequently appearing on networks such as MSNBC, ABC, CNN, NPR and Bloomberg, among other outlets.

At Columbia, Warren is also a Faculty Affiliate at the Institute for Research in African-American Studies, Faculty Fellow at the Institute for Social and Economic Research and Policy, and coordinates the Center for Urban Research & Policy Seminar Series. In 2013, he was included on the list of NBC’s theGrio’s 100 people making history today.  His research focuses on the intersection of labor, politics and race, as well as race and ethnicity.

Dorian currently serves on the boards of the Applied Research Center, Center for Community Change, ALIGN, the Model Alliance, the Discount Foundation and The Nation Magazine Editorial Board. Prior to his teaching position at Columbia University he worked with several organizations, including the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, American Rights at Work/Jobs with Justice and the NGLTF Policy Institute. He is the author of the forthcoming The Three Faces of Unions: Inclusion & Democracy in the U.S. Labor Movement and Boxing Out: Walmart & the Politics of Labor Market Regulation from Below.

Cathy Cohen

Cathy J. Cohen is the David and Mary Winton Green Professor of Political Science at the University of Chicago. Previously she served as the Deputy Provost for Graduate Education and the Director of the Center for the Study of Race, Politics and Culture at the University of Chicago. She has published two books and numerous academic articles, and her research has been cited in media outlets including The New York Times, The Washington Post, NPR and CNN.

Cohen founded and currently directs the Black Youth Project, an organization that focuses on empowering inner-city youth. She was a founding board member and former co-chair of the board of the Audre Lorde Project in NY. Cohen was also a founding member of Black AIDS Mobilization (BAM!) and one of the core organizers of two international conferences: “Black Nations / Queer Nations?” and “Race, Sex, Power.”

Cohen has served as an active member in numerous organizations such as the Black Radical Congress, African-American Women in Defense of Ourselves, and Ella’s Daughters. Currently, she serves on the boards of the Arcus Foundation, Chicago Votes, and the University of Chicago Charter Schools.
